Love, Death, Jealousy, and Fire

The Song of Solomon 8:6, “Set me as a seal upon thine heart, as a seal upon thine arm: for love is strong as death; jealousy is cruel as the grave: the coals thereof are coals of fire, which hath a most vehement flame.”

Love, death, jealousy and fire. The words in our study verse can only be interpreted when we look at a strong and devoted love.

Have you ever attended a wedding and listened to the vows of the bride and groom? Usually those vowsend, “till death do we part.” Solomon is declaring something similar to his love, the Shulamite. Solomon’s love for her was as sure as death. Solomon’s love for her burned like the coals of a vehement fire. He was jealous of her time. He wanted to be close to her and show her how much he loved her. Solomon, because of his love, wanted her to enjoy the riches of his kingdom.

The Lord Jesus Christ loves His bride, the family of God (Ephesians 5:25). Deuteronomy 4:24 teaches us that He is “a jealous God.” This is not a sinful jealousy, but a righteous jealousy (see 2 Corinthians 11:2).Because of His love, He will have His bride with Him one great and glorious day. He suffered the death and fires of hell that we deserve (when He suffered the Cross). The Lord’s death did not separate Him from His bride, but was an event that declares how much He loves her. In His death, He paid everything that was required for Him to have her. If you want to know how much Jesus loves you dear child of grace, search the scriptures and see the marks in His precious hands and feet (Psalm 22:16). Read the Bible and learn about His whipped back (Psalm 129:3). Isaiah 52:14, ‘As many were astonied at thee; his visage was so marred more than any man, and his form more than the sons of men:…”

Question? Do you love Him? Do you love the One that saved you from your sins? Do you love the One Who suffered what you deserve so that you will be with Him one day in heaven? If you love Him, it’s evidence that He first loved you (1 John 4:19). If you love Him, the Bible/gospel calls on you to show your love by living a life in accordance to His Word (the Bible). Amen!
