He is the I AM

The Song of Solomon 2:1, “I AM the rose of Sharon, and the lily of the valleys.”

The Song of Solomon 5:1, “I AM come into my garden, my sister, my spouse: I have gathered my myrrh with my spice; I have eaten my honeycomb with my honey; I have drunk my wine with my milk: eat, O friends; drink, yea, drink abundantly, O beloved.”

Have you ever noticed that the words “I AM” are all capital in our two study verses? I find this quite amazing considering that Solomon, by inspiration of Spirit, penned Proverbs 27:2, “Let another man praise thee, and not thine own mouth; a stranger, and not thine own lips.” If these words were Solomon’s and his alone, he would easily be considered a proud and boastful man. But the words are not Solomon’s alone. These words are easily ascribed to the Lord as He speaks about Himself. And when He speaks, it’s not proud boasting, but the truth and facts. When Jesus said in John 6:48, “I am that bread of life”; John 8:12, “I am the light of the world”; John 8:58, “Before Abraham was, I am”; John 10:7, “I am the door of the sheep”; John 10:11, “I am the good shepherd”; John 11:25, “I am the resurrection, and the life”; John 14:6, “I am the way, the truth, and the life”; and John 15:1, “I am the true vine” the Lord is not speaking in proud boasting, He is just stating the truth and the facts. I love John chapter 18, when they come to arrest Jesus He asked in John 18:4, “Whom seek ye?” They answered, “Jesus of Nazareth.” In John 18:5 the Lord declared “I am he…”

All of this reminds a Bible student of the event of Exodus 3:14 when the Lord spoke to Moses from the burning bush and said He is the “I AM THAT I AM:…” The Lord has never been a was or I want to be. He is the I AM. He is our all powerful and eternal God Who never changes. He is our great God and sovereign ruler of the universe. He is mighty to save and able to help His little children. He is worthy of our worship and praise.

Brothers and Sisters in Christ, the hymn writer had these thoughts in mind when he penned The Lily of the Valley. The words are very heart stirring and thought provoking.

I have found a friend in Jesus-
He’s ev’rything to me,
He’s the fairest of ten thousand to my soul;
The Lily of the Valley- in Him alone I see
All I need to cleanse and make me fully whole.
In sorrow He’s my comfort, in trouble He’s my stay,
He tells me ev’ry care on Him to roll;
He’s the Lily of the Valley, the Bright and Morning Star,
He’s the fairest of ten thousand to my soul.

He all my griefs has taken and all my sorrows borne,
In temptation He’s my strong and mighty tow’r;
I have all for Him forsaken and all my idols torn
From my heart, and now He keeps me by His pow’r.
Though all the world forsake me and Satan tempt me sore,
Through Jesus I shall safely reach the goal;
He’s the Lily of the Valley, the Bright and Morning Star,
He’s the fairest of ten thousand to my soul.

He will never, never leave me nor yet forsake me here,
While I live by faith and do His blessed will;
A wall of fire about me, I’ve nothing now to fear-
With His manna He my hungry soul shall fill.
Then sweeping up to glory to see His blessed face,
Where rivers of delight shall ever roll;
He’s the Lily of the Valley, the Bright and Morning Star,
He’s the fairest of ten thousand to my soul.

Amen!
